BINGHAMTON — Should a prayer be said before each Broome County Legislature meeting? And, if so, what type?

The somewhat controversial topic is one that has been discussed nationwide, and now Broome’s legislators are tackling it.

When it comes to many of Broome’s monthly legislature meetings, a member of the group has typically said a non-denominational prayer at the beginning of each gathering.

As of late, however, the prayer has become Christian-based and read by Legislator Julie Lewis, R-District 6. In recent months, she’s prayed to Jesus Christ, causing a stir with some members of the legislature.
