Take Action: Help Rep. Peter King Hear Muslim Americans, Not Hold Hearings About Muslim Americans
Representative Peter King (R-NY), Chair of the Homeland Security Committee of the House of Representatives, plans to hold public hearings about the “radicalization” of Muslim Americans. In a December 20, 2010 interview with Fox News, he even went so far as to say that we are “under siege by Muslim terrorists.”
Rather than protecting our country, these hearings could make a mockery of the values most important to protect – notably our freedom of religion. They would single out an American community and subject it to public diatribe in a way we have not seen since the “Red Scares” of the Cold War.
In reply, some have harped on Peter King’s reputed past links to the IRA. But the present is too valuable for “he said/she said” discussions of his past. We must stay focused on the real issue at hand: Representative King wants to hold hearings about the purported radicalization of American Muslims because he does not seem to be hearing about American Muslims and the integral roles they play in our society.
Help Representative King hear about Muslim friends, family, and colleagues who contribute so profoundly to our lives each and everyday. Suggestions include firefighters, police officers, politicians, teachers, non-profit leaders, parents, children – or any Muslim-American who has truly touched your life and made difference.
You can reach him by phone (202-225-7896), e-mail (Pete.King@mail.house.gov), post mail (339 Cannon House Office Building; Washington, D.C. 20515), or a YouTube video that we would gladly feature on the Religious Freedom USA website.
Make sure Representative Peter King hears about Muslim-Americans, rather than putting an entire community on the stand.
